noriware is a Swiss start-up specialising in the development of sustainable packaging materials made from seaweed. Founded in 2022 by Jessica Farda and Stefan Grieder, the company's goal is to create plastic-free materials that break down harmlessly in the environment, contributing to a safer and cleaner planet.

What polymers are used to create this product, and where are they sourced?

The norifilm™ is created using biopolymers extracted from seaweed, including alginates and other naturally occurring compounds. These are sourced from trusted partners and suppliers in Asia, Europe, and Africa. While the seaweed industry is more developed in Asia, we are actively working with European producers to support the growth of the sector locally. This includes using their by-products and waste streams as fillers in our formulations to make sure nothing goes to waste—creating materials that are not just sustainable, but also cost-effective.

What are the main uses or applications of this biopolymer-based product?

The norifilm™ has been specially developed for the requirements of plastic films in the packaging industry to replace synthetic plastics in everyday packaging while ensuring functionality and sustainability. It can be used as a window or liner in cardboard packaging, polybags for e-commerce and packaging for dishwasher tabs.

Can the norifilm™ withstand heat, moisture, or other environmental factors?

The norifilm™ is resistant to moisture, has a low degree of water solubility, and begins to experience physical degradation at temperatures exceeding 150°C. It stays stable in mildly humid conditions.

How long does it take for the product to decompose in industrial composting facilities or natural environments?

The norifilm™ naturally breaks down in soil and compost when microbes come into contact with it. In industrial composting facilities, where heat and moisture are added, the process is even faster, with complete decomposition within 12 weeks. Its unmodified structure ensures it leaves no harmful residues behind—just as nature intended.

How can the norifilm™ be integrated in the packaging production process?

The norifilm™ is designed to be processed on existing plastic processing equipment with minimal adjustments. Its adaptability to common manufacturing techniques makes it simple to integrate into existing production workflows.
