Plastic-free sealing trials with fresh berries

We recently conducted packaging trials together with Herbert Widmann GmbH, one of Germany’s leading berry packers, to explore plastic-free sealing solutions for fresh produce.

During the trials, blueberries and physalis were sealed in uncoated cardboard trays using noriware’s seaweed-based film. Seeing the material perform on standard sealing machines was an important moment for the team, as it demonstrated that nature-based solutions can work within existing packaging processes.

The collaboration highlights the potential of seaweed-based films to replace conventional plastic in fresh food applications without requiring changes to established processes.

What made these trials particularly valuable was the open and collaborative exchange with the Herbert Widmann team. Their willingness to test new approaches and share practical feedback led to constructive discussions about real-world applications for plastic-free packaging in the fresh produce sector.

We especially appreciated the positive and open atmosphere created by the Herbert Widmann team, including Julius Garbe, Andreas Kreuzmair, and Simon Gamper. Their trust, time, and hands-on collaboration made these trials both valuable and enjoyable.
